Deduplication Delight: Saving Arsenal’s Storage

DEDUPLICATION DELIGHT:

How Strawberry is Saving Arsenal Football Club’s Storage

By Derek Barrilleaux, CEO, Projective

I’m really proud of the long-term relationships we’ve built with our customers – especially when it brings you the privilege to collaborate with some of the coolest companies out there. At Projective, we’ve been happy to work with Arsenal Football Club for quite a few years now.

Arsenal F.C. has a substantial, constantly-growing subscriber base made up of global faithful fans and followers, to whom they deliver exclusive content. The Club runs its own media business, which produces the majority of its content in-house, including full coverage of each match day, home and away, long form documentary content from across the club, press conferences, as well as short form content for social media. In addition they deliver a range of engaging content such as interviews, live press conferences, social media posts and off-the-field material.

On top of all that, their subscribers get uniquely curated content offerings, so it is fair to say that their creative teams have their hands full producing captivating experiences for Arsenal’s F.C.’s followers worldwide.

To manage such growing content demand, Arsenal needed a post-production collaboration platform that enabled them to tame the influx of raw content and increase the productivity of their production teams. Their solution of choice was Strawberry by Projective, which, with its easy-to-use toolset, seamless integration with Adobe© Premiere Pro and remote review and approval capabilities has helped Arsenal’s media production team save time and money through faster and more efficient production.

Nearly Two Years’ Worth of Savings

At Projective, we stay close to all our customers and we enjoy seeing how they evolve and enhance their workflows through the use of Strawberry. Arsenal’s media team recently added our proactive deduplication service to their set up. The tool eliminates unnecessary duplicates while retaining descriptive metadata. It optimizes storage usage without being intrusive to the creative process, i.e. no media offline errors caused by accidentally deleted files.

We were pleased to see that upon turning on the service, the Arsenal team immediately reclaimed a whopping 90 TB of space on their primary storage!

To give you an idea of what this means to their business, according to John Dollin, senior production and engineering manager at Arsenal Football Club indicated that, in terms of storing content, they “can burn through well over ten terabytes per month”. Therefore, just turning on the Strawberry deduplication service has now freed up an impressive ten months’ worth of storage, previously taken up by unnecessary duplicate files.

The Service that Keeps Giving Back

As awesome as it is to save big on storage, that’s not the only impressive deliverable of Strawberry’s deduplication service. What makes it an essential tool for any post-production environment is that the service runs in the background constantly finding duplicate files and replacing them with links – all without disrupting the creative process. In other words, your editors won’t notice that duplicate files are being cleaned up.

Now Arsenal’s tech team can cross off one more item from their to-do list, and focus on other high-value tasks, since the Strawberry deduplication service acts as their active production storage housekeeper.

Projective’s Strawberry has gradually become key to our content operations, helping our creative teams work in a more organized manner and speeding up review and approval processes. The addition of the deduplication service has introduced additional operational efficiencies and cost savings, eliminating unnecessary content copies without interrupting editing workflows
